Diet Rite was introduced in 1958 by the Royal Crown Co. as the first diet soft drink. With this revolutionary introduction, calorie-conscious soft drink lovers were finally given a choice consistent with their lifestyle — a great-tasting cola with zero carbs, zero calories, zero caffeine and zero sodium.
Diet Rite Cola was originally marketed on a limited basis as a special dietary soft drink, but after a trial run in select markets, consumers began requesting more of the diet cola beyond its current territory.
Diet Rite Cola was introduced nationwide in 1962, and within 18 months it had become the No. 4 cola in the United States.
